Modern Jazz Dans Ensemble  (MJD) was formed by Jan Åström in spring 1994 to give jazzdancing a chance to establish itself and become an accepted artform in Sweden, and make a difference between showjazz and consertjazz. We have so far broken several barriers and showed the way in how to intergrate different artforms with jazzdancing. We also stand as a goal for all young dancers who want to persue
a professional career with jazz in a company.

Our first work "the ten", inspired by the ten commandments, had its premier at The House of Dance Swedens biggest dancestage. It was extremely well acknowledged by the audience.

At 1995 Waterfestival we had our own spot at the stage of Culture and was seen in several TV- spots.

1996 we had premier on our second piece "Series" again at The House of Dance. We still have the record for the longest run, with this piece. This was followed by an extensive tour all over Sweden.

In December of 1996 it was time for our third piece - "menn". This piece was made and danced by men. Again at The House of Dance and followed by an extensive tour all over Sweden.

In April of 1997 we collaborated with Bernt Rosengrens Oktett in a piece inspired of  "Porgy and Bess" at The Culture House in Stockholm. In the summer it was again time for an appearance at the Waterfestival in Stockholm,

In the fall of -97 we again took "menn" out on an extensive tour. This time with only women dancing the piece.

On the 23rd of january we had premier on our 6th piece: "Jazz, go for it!". Again at The House of Dance in Stockholm.

Our jazzdance is, with roots from Africa via American musical theatre, a contemporary, dramatic Swedish jazzdance. With influences from all the other artforms. A Swedish artform.

We are proud of what we have achieved so far.
